Day 46: Team East
Paula and Joey spend three days on a ferry. They were lucky to get a ticket to cross the Black Sea from Odessa (Ukraine) to Batumi (Georgia) last minute. Crossing the Black Sea on a cargo ship for trucks is an adventure itself.
So Paula and Joey basically shared the ship with truckers, but were not the only travelers on the ship. They meet a Swiss family, Anna-Lena, Enda with their kids Nika (5) and Finnian (4). The Swiss family is taking a break from their jobs as chefs and travels across Europe and West Asia in their van. The other person not being a trucker is Martin, a retired Swiss guy who is backpacking the world without a detailed plan and without phone or any other digital device. On the ship they have a food schedule of three meals a day and they would assign a specific table to each passenger. So they put all foreigners together at table No. 4. The group of travelers are always the last ones in the canteen since all the truckers eat and leave fast. So the travelers get to know each other well and discover that they basically have done a similar trip so far - starting in Switzerland, traveling to Germany, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria and Ukraine now crossing the Black Sea all together.
Paula and Joey use the time on the ship to catch up on sleep. On the ship they sleep in little cabins with bunkbeds which fortunately are bigger than then ones in the trains. Other than that they use the time to read and to journal and Joey teaches Paula how to play poker.
